One of the largest of all the lizard families is the Scincidae, or skink family. The most prominent skink is blue-tongued skink. There are ten different species and subspecies of blue-tongued skink, all of which sport the trademark berry-blue tongue. The Merauke blue tongue skink is the longest of the blue tongue species reaching lengths in excess of 20-28 inches, with some animals reaching up to 30 inchs when full grown. They can be found around the city of Merauke, which is in southern Irian Jaya, to all of southern Papua New Guinea. The Merauke isn't too terribly hard to find, and typically has a great temperament. Merauke is pronounced "Mer-Roo-Kee". "Mer" as in "fur", not "mare".
In the wild, blue-tongued skinks are omnivores and feed on a variety of animal and plant materials including insects, snails, flowers, fruits and berries. At Exotic Edventures our blue-tongue skink is fed fresh greens, fruit, insects, snails, hard boiled eggs, turkey, and super premium canned dog food (low fat/high protein).
