Uromastyx are a genus of lizard in the agamid family, the same family that includes bearded dragons and frilled dragons. There are at least 18 different species of uromastyx that are officially recognized along with a variety of subspecies. Uromastyx are often referred to their common name, which is spinytail or spiny-tailed lizard. This name comes from the 10 to 30 rings of spiked scales covering the top side of their tail. Uromastyx lizards inhabit areas in North Africa, the Middle East and across south-central Asia to the Indian subcontinent.

Meet Darwin, our mali uromastyx! Darwin absolutely loves basking in his enclosure, where his hot spot can be as hot as 120 degrees. He also has a variety of hiding spots and caves to retreat to if he needs to cool off. We do not need to provide Darwin with water in his enclosure as he gets all the hydration that he needs from the vegetables that he consumes.
