Pythons are a family of nonvenomous snakes found in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Among its members are some of the largest snakes in the world. There are 31 species of pythons currently recognized.

Ball Pythons

Ball pythons, commonly referred to as Royal Pythons,  are nonvenomous constrictors that can be found in sub-Sahara Africa. Ball pythons are the second smallest of all the African pythons. Their name comes from their tendency to curl up into a ball when frightened or stressed. The average ball python can live to be around 30 years old, though the oldest ball python on record lived to be 47 years old. Adults can grow to be 3-5 feet long, with females tending to be larger than males. Ball pythons have become popular in the pet trade due to their docile temperament. They come in a wide assortment of morphs ranging from normal to clown, albino, and even blue eyed leucistic.

Conservation Status: Stable Species

Exotic Edventures has a number of ball pythons in our collection with a wide variety of colors and patterns. The oldest animal ambassador at our facility is our female normal ball python, Gina Davis. She is almost 5 feet long and hatched in 2004. Gina is extreme gentle and is a great ambassador for her species, especially when meeting people who may be a little frightened of our scaly friends.

Red Blood Python

The Red Blood Python, also known as the Brongersmai short-tailed python and the red short-tailed python, is a species of python found in southwest Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, eastern Sumatra and some of the surrounding islands. They get their common names from their reddish coloration. This red coloration can range from a rich, bold red to a dusky, orange-red, although they sometimes exhibit rusty brown colors too.

Blood pythons are considered the largest species in the short-tail python family. They generally average 4 to 5 feet in length as captive adults. Healthy adult weight at this length is approximately 10 to 15 pounds. Older adults may reach lengths of more than 6 feet and weigh 20 pounds or more. Blood pythons are heavy-bodied, terrestrial snakes, and a 5-foot-long specimen  is a solid, impressive animal!
